Chairman of Winfes Don Wilkin said, ?There was a group of young men who started this event back in 2005 by just hanging around and having parties on the Whit weekend. When the NRP government got into office in 2006, they decided that the group needed some structure. So I became Chairman for the group and I served as a mentor to the young men, and Winfes officially began in 2007.?
?We wanted to bring folklore, troupes, bands and masquerade back into our culture,? he said. He added that another aspect of the event is promoting economic activity, not only in St. James, but on the entire island during Winfes.
He added, that the participation of the general public has increased, and because of it, more activities have been added over the years.
?This year the opening ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 24th at Rumours Bar and Grill, and on the Friday, there will be the calypso show, followed by a parade. On Saturday the ?Ocean Fest? fishing competition takes place, followed a presentation by some of the local performers scheduled to appear on the St. Kitts Music Festival followed by a dance at Dicks Bar. On Sunday we head to the St. James race track for drag racing, and on Monday we have the J?ouvert jam at Herbert?s Beach, where we will have our Winfes ?fun beach day,? he said.
