Student Lemuel Pemberton has recently returned to Nevis, having completed a Capacity Building workshop for Underwater Cultural Heritage in the Caribbean.
Lemuel who lives on the island in NEVIS REAL ESTATE was nominated by the Nevis Historical and Conservation Society to represent Nevis and St. Kitts, at the underwater archeology workshop, held in Jamaica.
He said that there are a number of sunken ships in the waters of St. Kitts and Nevis that people have shown interest in studying.
?There are some persons that would really like to study ship wrecks from the wars we had in the 17th century and before that. In1630-1640 the whole tobacco fleet that was taking tobacco from St. Kitts back to England was wrecked in Basseterre Bay. HMS Soul Bay sunk in the Southwest coast of Nevis. It is believed in 2010-2011 the remains of that ship were been found including some of the cannons,? he commented.
Underwater cultural heritage could become a huge tourist attraction in Nevis, he said, but the process was still in its early stages at the moment.
